1 Firefighter Dies in 4-Alarm Fire at NW Side Shopping Strip

One firefighter is dead, two others are recovering from injuries suffered while battling a 4-alarm fire at a Northwest Side shopping center.

The massive fire broke out around 9 pm Thursday at the strip mall housing a Texas Thrift Store, a gym and a computer repair shop on Ingram Road near Loop 410.

Scott Deem, a 6-year veteran of the San Antonio Fire Department, died in the blaze. About a hundred firefighters saluted as an ambulance carrying Deem’s departed on the way to the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s office.

Two other firefighters were taken to area hospitals.

Fighting back tears, San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood asked the citizens of San Antonio for prayers. “We’re hurting,” he said.
