Texas Democrats will fill the Alamodome over the next several days–with their State party convention set to begin Thursday in San Antonio.
However, at least one expert said the name you might hear most of all will be “Donald Trump.”
“Not only did they Texas Democrats) have a top tier, high-quality candidate in Wendy Davis for Governor (in 2014), they also spent close to $50-million. The result was a shellacking at the hands of Greg Abbott–with Davis losing by more than 20-points” said Rice University Political Science Department Chairman and Baker Institute Fellow Mark Jones.
“Donald Trump represents a real drag for the Republican Ticket” Jones told KTSA News, adding “The more Texas Democrats can emphasize Donald Trump, and make this a referendum on Donald Trump–the better they’re likely to do in November.”
Enter Donald Trump as Democrats begin the process of re-building, even if the results are sure to lean toward the Republican side in November.
“The silver lining for Democrats is with Donald Trump at the top of the (Republican) ticket, they can hope to at least close the gap–or, their margin of defeat” Jones said, adding “If not significant, at least positive gains in terms of capturing at least four to six seats in the Texas House.”
