Trey’s Take: Immediate Action is Needed

US Attorney General Loretta Lynch is in charge of the most powerful investigative and prosecutorial organization in the world. As such she is the ultimate decision-maker concerning which criminal cases will be prosecuted by the federal government.

Even though her position is a political appointment, her charge is to put on the blind-fold of Lady Justice and hold the scales in her hand as she weighs the evidence. She is to not consider the power, position, politics, or personality of the individual. As Joe Friday would say, “Just the facts Ma’am.”

The FBI is the investigative arm of her department. They are the most thorough and well-run law-enforcement agency in the world. Their charge too is to be independent and divorced from the politics of the administration and all involved parties.

The White House has confirmed that the FBI is conducting a criminal investigation into the “homebrew” email server on which Hillary Clinton conducted business while she was Secretary of State in the Obama Administration. There is a concurrent investigation being conduction by independent non-profit group Judicial Watch.

The usual process which is followed is once the FBI concludes their investigation they submit their summary findings along with the evidence to the Attorney General. The AG, in this case Mrs. Lynch, then decides whether the case is worthy of prosecution under the law based solely on the facts and evidence. Does the person, whomever they may be, commit crime-s worthy of prosecution under US statute?

That question concerning Hillary Clinton and/or members of her staff will land before AG Loretta Lynch.

So why on earth would she meet privately with Former President Bill Clinton on a jet parked at an airport in Phoenix, AZ?

She says the meeting was “about grandchildren, it was primarily social about our travels and he mentioned golf he played in Phoenix.”

“There was no discussion on any matter pending before the Department or any matter pending with any other body, there was no discussion of Benghazi, no discussion of State Department emails, by way of example I would say it was current news of the day, the Brexit decision and what it would mean,” she said.

I hope that’s true. However, this investigation has begged for an independent council/investigator from the very beginning. This meeting just made that need more apparent.

Because of the power the Clinton’s hold, and especially Bill Clinton as former President, if she chooses not to prosecute Hillary Clinton that decision will never be accepted as legitimate. This private meeting has tainted that conclusion.

AG Lynch should recuse herself from that decision making authority in this case and the Department should work with Congress to employ an independent council/investigator immediately.
