A Bexar County Sheriff's Detention Deputy found herself behind bars Thursday on charges of Driving While Intoxicated and Resisting Arrest.An officer with the San Antonio Police Department arrested Susanna Cervantes (36) around 9:30 Thursday Night after an onlooking officer watched her run her car into two concrete propane barriers in a parking lot around Loop 1604 and Braun Rd.
"The officer went to approach that vehicle. She observed the vehicle back up from the poles and then strike them again. The officer then went to the passenger side of the vehicle and attempted to make contact with the driver of the car, but the driver became combative," said Sergeant Javier Salazar with the SAPD.
The officer reported that the suspect attempted to reach into the center console several times, and that fearing for her safety she tazered Cervantes.
"The suspect ripped the tazer probes out of her body and continued her tyraid, trying to get back into the console of the car," said Sergeant Salazar.
Deputy Cervantes was not on duty at the time, but in fact was already on administrative leave from the Sheriff's Department for a Domestic Disturbance incident back in November, in which Cervantes reportedly tried to kick out the windows of a police car.
"I take these situations, these matters very seriously," said Sheriff Susan Pamerleau. "What I can tell you right now about Deputy Cervantes is that she was already on administrative leave, and that will continue."
Sheriff Pamerleau says more serious action against Cervantes will be determined by the results of the SAPD's criminal investigation, and the Sheriff Department's own internal investigation of her.
