Chan Speaks on Controversial Comments

By Bill O'Neil

She meant no offense--the word from San Antonio City Councilwoman Elisa Chan publicly addressing her secretly recorded comments on homosexuality--which have generated so much controvery.

"My belief system is mine--and it is not meant that would like to impose those beliefs on anyone else" Chan said in a City Hall press conference. She said the comments were made in what was supposed to be a brain storming session for her and her staff.

"It was a confidential meeting set in the privacy of my office--where none of us are supposed to worry about what we say" Chan said adding some of what was said has been taken out of context--such as her use of the word "disgusting."

"I made that comment in reaction to pedophilia and beasiality--and quite frankly--I still find those behaviors disgusting" Chan said.

While the Councilwoman said she has the utmost respect for the LGBT community, she defended her right to have her own opinions.

"Political correctness will not win this day. Standing firm as an individual--in service to the whole community--does" the Councilwoman said.
