City Attorney Stepping Down

by Elizabeth Ruiz

San Antonio is looking for a new city attorney to replace Michael Bernard, who's going back to private practice.

Bernard has announced he's joining the law firm of Bracewell and Giuliani as it expands its public finance and public law practices here in San Antonio.

"Michael's exactly the type of person we want to lead this effort in San Antonio," said Tullos Wells, senior partner at Bracewell and Giuliani.

Bernard has served as chief legal counsel to San Antonio and the City Council for the past 8 years and previously worked as First Assistant District Attorney to Bexar County D.A. Susan Reed.

"He knows a lot of people.  He has a terrific reputation, not only in the public finance and public law area, but also is a first class litigator in white collar and related areas," said Wells.

Now it's up to the city manager to recommend a replacement for Bernard to the City Council, which will have the final say.

Former City Attorney Jane Macon, Blakely Fernandez and William Avila also are joining the Bracewell and Giuliani San Antonio office.
