Col. William B. Travis Letter To The Alamo

by Elizabeth Ruiz & Johnny Shannon

"Victory or death! Never surrender or retreat"! Those words were written by Colonel  William Barrett Travis February 24, 1836 during the 13-day siege at the Alamo.
Friday, that famous letter is coming to the Alamo for the first time since it was written.
Preservation officer John Anderson at the State Library and Archives says security will be tight as the 177-year-old letter is transported from Austin to San Antonio.
"That was one of the very serious concerns that the Library and Archives Commission had about taking priceless, iconic treasures out of the archive," said Anderson.
The Texas Department of Public Safety will escort the letter, complete with air support.
"There is a fine arts company that routinely transports priceless documents and art objects and they're involved in transporting it," said Anderson.
An arrival ceremony is scheduled at 4 pm Friday at the Alamo and the document will go on display Saturday through March 7.
Anderson told 550 KTSA News that the letter will be in a climate controlled, bullet-proof case during the exhibit at the shrine of Texas liberty
where it will be guarded 24/7 by Alamo Rangers.
