Commissioners Weigh in on Immigration

By Bill O'Neil

Bexar County Commissioners weigh in on the immigration debate--urging state lawmakers not to pass laws targeting people on the basis of race, ethnicity, or national origin.

Spurred by the tone of the discussion of immigration in Austin in recent years, Commissioner Paul Elizondo began his push to pass the resolution, wondering where a line might be drawn.

"What are you going to do later on with people of Middle Eastern ethnicity, and so forth" Elizondo said as the resolution was discussed by the Court. It's a topic Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff said hits home for him--he told the Court he still has his grandmother's alien registration card.

"Who had to register in 1940 (as) German, who came to the country in the 1870's" Wolff said.

The resolution is similar to one passed by San Antonio's City Council. Another of other communities around the state have also adopted such resolutions.
