An apparent secret recording of a meeting of San Antonio City Councilwoman Elisa Chan is generating a lot of controversy.
Specifically--it is comments Chan is purportedly heard making on the tape about homosexuality creating the storm around her. At one point, Chan uses the word disgusting. She also is heard saying homosexuality is a choice--and said gay couples should not be allowed to adopt.
"People feel more than anything feel shocked and hurt to hear this from a City Councilwoman who does represent LGBT citizens in her distrrict" said Pride Center Board Chair Richard Farias--who told 550 KTSA News what Chan said is "frankly hurtful."
Meanwhile, Chan is finding some defenders. In a statement, The San Antonio-based Justice Foundation said Chan has a right to express her point of view--and is offering her legal assistance to "protect her rights."
The comments come amid the continued public debate over proposed changes to the city's anti-disctimination ordinance. As for the "secret" recording of Chan's comments--Farias said it does make him uncomfortable.
"Recording somebody without their knowledge is not neccesarily the best way to find out how somebody really feels. I think that has to do with anything" he told 550 KTSA News.
