Council Signs Off on Loan Program

By Bill O'Neil

A sign of what's to come for San Antonio businesses struggling with the city's growing pains?

City Council has approved a pilot program to provide loans to businesses along Blanco Road--which are behind on their utility bills as a result odf continuing construction alogn a portion of the roadway.

"In a scramble to figure out what to do to save these busineses, this is the best we've come up with, given the amount of time we've got--and given the urgency of the situation with these businesses" said Councilman Diego Bernal in supporting the program.

But those backing the loans were far from the unanimous voice at City Hall.

"It puts us on a pth as a city in saying we're going to fill that gap--or we're lookign to fill that gap" said Councilman Ron Nirenberg, uncomfortable with the message being sent to businesses by the project--especially when it comes to projects such as the one on Blanco Raod--which is moving along on schedule.

About two-dozen businsses may take advantage of the loan offers.
