Courthouse Steps Weddings

by Elizabeth Ruiz & Johnny Shannon

At the age of 83, the Rev. Joe Sullivan is continuing the Valentine's Day tradition he started 25 years ago....performing free wedding ceremonies on the steps of the Bexar County Courthouse.

"It's a commitment he has between God and the community," said his wife, Carla Sullivan.
She told 550 KTSA News her husband injects a bit of humor in the ceremonies to put the couples at ease.
"Just to break the ice, you know, with those couples who might be a little nervous about a commitment," she chuckled.

The Rev. Sullivan performed the first mass wedding ceremony shortly after midnight and four more were scheduled Thursday at 10 a.m., noon, 2 pm and 4 pm.

Through the years, some couples have offered Sullivan a donation, but he won't accept it.
"No, no, no. Absolutely not. Not even a donation to our (All Believers) Church.  That's just the way it is," said Carla.
