San Antonio police believe the teenage driver involved in a crash that left a Brandeis High School student dead may have been street racing.
Officer Matt Porter says the fatal wreck occured during lunchtime Tuesday on Loop 1604 near Hausman Road .
He says the driver of a pickup was attempting to make a left turn when it was struck by one of the cars.
"We believe that the driver of that car may have been racing," said Porter.
Seventeen-year-old Gabriella Lerma, a passenger in that vehicle, was flown to University Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival. The driver and two other passengers, all students at Brandeis, were transported by ambulance.
The driver of the pickup also was transported to a hospital with injuries suffered in the crash.
Meanwhile, the search continues for the other car that may have been involved in street racing.
"We are cooperating with the San Antonio Police Department as they investigate allegations of racing that may have been a contributing factor to this accident," said Gonzales.
