Funeral services are pending for a retired San Antonio police officer killed in a traffic accident near Floresville.
Department of Public Safety trooper Anthony Flores told 550 KTSA News 68-year-old Roger Miller was eastbound on Highway 97 Wednesday morning when a collision on the westbound lane sent a pickup truck into his path and collided head on with his SUV.
"The driver of the pickup had slammed on the brakes to avoid hitting a dog and a tractor trailer rig hit the rear of the truck, pushing it into the opposite lane of traffic," said DPS Trooper Anthony Flores.
Miller was pronounced dead on the scene and the driver of the pickup, identified as 67-year-old Robert Lazcano, was airlifted to University Hospital.
Miller was a detective when he retired from the San Antonio Police Department in 1995 after serving on the force since 1967. He later worked for the La Vernia Police Department.
Police Chief Bruce Ritchey told 550 KTSA News that Miller was on the way home from a meeting of the Floresville Electric Light & Power System when he was killed.
"He was on the board of directors and had just finished a meeting and he was on Highway 97 heading back to his home in La Vernia," said Ritchey.
He says Miller was always volunteering and helping out the community.
"He served on the La Vernia City Council from 2007 to 2009. He was a member of the La Vernia Lions Club. He's a good man and will be greatly missed," said Ritchey.
