A military judge has sentenced Major Nidal Hasan to death for the 2009 shooting rampage at Fort Hood--which left 13 people dead and dozens more hurt.
Hasan was convicted last week after putting up virtually no defense while representing himself at his trial. He declined the opportunity to make a statement to the jury during closing arguments.
The Army psychiatrist has said the rampage was a response to U.S. efforts agaisnt Muslim insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan. While Hasan seemed to be pushing for a death sentence for himself, many legal watchers expect to see years of appeals before an execution can be carried out.
