Ginobili Proud of Argentinean Pope

by Elizabeth Ruiz

Spurs star Manu Ginobil says it's incredible that an Argentinean has been selected to lead more than 1 billion Catholics around the world.

During a shootaround Thursday, the Spurs guard said he was stunned and proud that a Cardinal from his native country of Argentina was chosen to be the next Pope

"We were watching and when we heard the name, I said 'what? Are we correct?  I mean, did we hear that right?'

He says there's a lot of excitement in Argentina over the selection of Jose Mario Bergoglio as the new Pope.

"The country's gone crazy. Catholicism is the main religion in my country and of course, it's a big thing," said Ginobili.

After his election, Pope Francis remarked that the church had gone to "the end of the world" to find the next leader of the Roman Catholic Church
Ginobili agrees that Argentina is pretty far away.   He says his teammates made similar remarks when he pointed out his native country on a globe.

"And they looked and said 'Wow, that's way down there' and I said yeah, we're basically a few miles from Antartica, so it is basically the end of the world," said Ginobili.
