by Elizabeth RuizThe Texas Department of Public Safety is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of a sex offender who stabbed an officer and fled as he was being transported from Florida to Nevada.
Two officers were escorting 41-year-old Antonio Morales in an SUV after he was booted off a flight in Houston because he was disruptive.
They drove from Houston to Dallas to meet a third officer who was going to help with the transport.
They decided to stop at the Walmart store in Grapevine before meeting their colleague at DFW. One officer went into the store and the other stayed in the vehicle with Morales, who was said to be wearing handcuffs and a belly chain.
"One of the escorts went into Walmart to get some supplies for the road trip and when he came back out, his partner was down and the prisoner was gone," said Grapevine police Sgt. Robert Eberling.
He says the injured officer had been stabbed with eyeglasses.
"He somehow removed his eyeglasses and broke them and used the earpiece to stab the officer," Eberling told 550 KTSA News.
He says the injured officer is in serious, but stable condition.
Morales is about 5'7" and weighs about 175 pounds with brown eyes and brown hair.
He has a tattoo of an Indian riding horseback across his left shoulder.
Eberling says the prisoner could be in a 2008 White Ford Explorer that was stolen from a nearby motel about the same time Morales made his getaway Tuesday night in Grapevine.
It has Texas plates 19ZJW8.
