Millions Ready to Hit TX Roads

By Bill O'Neil

Are you ready to hit the roads for the long Memorial Day holiday weekend? If so, you can expect plenty of company on those highways.

"AAA Texas forecasts 2.9 million Texans will be traveling fifty miles or more away from home during the Memorial Day Weekend. That's going to be up about 1.1% over last year" said the auto club's Doug Shupe. He told 550 KTSA News the plans those travelers have vary a great degree.

"Among trhe top activites for folks over the holiday weekend include visiting friends and family, dining, shopping, going to a beach or watefront--and then touring or sightseeing" Shupe told 550 KTSA News.

When it comes to paying for the fuel for that trip--Shupe said where you are in Texas will say a whiole lot about how much it will cost you.

"The statewide average is now $3.43 in the State of Texas--that price is two-cents more than last week, and seven-cents more than last month--but it is eight-cents less than what we were paying on this same day last year" Shupe said, noting portions of the state continue to be impacted by refinery troubles in the middle of the country.

"Amarillo for example--drivers are now paying $3.74--that is 14-cents more than what they were paying last week" Shupe said.
