Monday's High Temp Sets New Record

by Elizabeth Ruiz

San Antonio has set a new temperature record for March 18.

"San Antonio reached 95 degrees at 3:21 pm Monday," said National Weather Service Meteorologist Steve Smart.

The previous record was 93 degrees on March 18, 1894. Smart says the ingredients were right for record heat.

"We had real dry air from the west and you had southerly winds at a low level and westerly winds aloft and that helps create warming conditions in the lower atmosphere," said Smart.

Add plenty of sunshine to that and you get a new record high, but Smart says it's not a record for the hottest day in March.

"Twice 100 degrees was reached in the month of March, once in 1971 and once in 1991, so 95 degrees is not the record temperature for March," Smart told 550 KTSA News.

He says we can expect cooler temperatures the rest of the week.
