Police Probe Secret Recordings at OLLU

by Elizabeth Ruiz

The San Antonio Police Department is investigating recordings in which an administrator at Our Lady of the Lake University made racial comments about a student and a female employee.

In the conversations that were secretly recorded, University Vice President Robert Bisking is heard referring to a student as "the angry black woman."

He also talks about a ploy to get a female minority employee to quit.

"I'm having the brand new African-American dean and Latin department chair tell the minority female, 'You ain't worth a ____.'"

In another conversation, Bisking makes a disparaging remark about the faculty assembly president.

"The University finds those words in these edits, in these transcripts,  unacceptable and not reflective of Our Lady of the Lake University and its core values," spokesman Dan Yoxall told 550 KTSA News.

Sister Jane Ann Slater issued a written statement saying the words and expressions in the recordings "are not befitting of our heritage as a Catholic university founded by the Sisters of Divine Providence."

She also said the conversations were illegally recorded.

"University, local and federal law enforcement are conducting a thorough investigation and will pursue it to the fullest measure, including prosecution for criminal activity," said Slater.

In Texas, recordings are legal if one party to the conversation knows that it's being taped, but Yoxall told 550 KTSA News that wasn't the case.

"These recordings were obtained illegally.  They were taped in an office by a party who was not there," said Yoxall.

Dr. Bisking issued a written apology.

“My choice of words was unprofessional and inappropriate. I am deeply sorry for the hurt they have caused this institution that I love. I have asked the campus community for forgiveness,” said Bisking.

Yoxall says Bisking remains on the job as the investigation continues.
