Republicans to Vote on Streetcar

By Bill O'Neil

Republican voters in Bexar County will get their chance to cast ballots on downtown streetcar plans in a non-binding referendum set for the May 27th runoff--and urge their Democratic counterparts to do the same.

The referendum will consist of two questions--whether or not you support the streetcar plan--and whether or not you think you should be allowed to vote on it.

"I think that's what we're missing these days--we elect these guys, and they just kind of do what they want to do, and they forget we put them in office, and they work for us" said Bexar County Republican Party Chairman Robert Stovall, who told 550 KTSA News he has sent a letter to Bexar County Democratic Party Chairman Manuel Medina, urging him to call for Democrats to ask the same questions on their runoff ballot.

Whatever the answers, Stovall said the results could bring some clarity to the issue.

"If it comes out that it's favoarble to VIA, then they have a green light if you will" Stovall said.

Officials with the Bexar County Democratic Party told 550 KTSA News they have yet to see Stovall's letter to Medina, and can not comment on the matter until they do.
