Runoff Election for Lt. Gov, Senate Bids

By Kurt Gilchrist

Texans head back to the polls for Tuesday's primary runoff--with two especially noteworthy statewide races.

Perhaps the most attention-grabbing contest pits incumbent David Dewhurst against State Senator Dan Patrick for the GOP nomination for Lieutenant Governor.

"It looks like Dan Ptrick has the edge. He won in the first round in the primary... he came out about 13-points ahead" said University of Texas-Arlington Political Scientist Alan Saxe. The race has turned especially nasty in recent days--with Texas Land Commissioner--and one-time rival for the nomination Jerry Patterson--releasing records showing Patrick was hospitalized for depression several decades ago.

Another closely watched race is the Democratic battle for the party's U.S. Senate nomination--which features David Alameel and Kesha Rogers--who has openly called for President Barack Obama's impeachment as she has campaigned. Saxe told 550 KTSA News whover emerges as the winner there faces a big uphill climb in November.

"You have to give John Cornyn the big, big lead in that particular race" Saxe said.

Other nominations to be decided include the Agriculture Commissioner for both parties--a race that features "KInky" Friedman on the Democratic side--as wella s the Republican nominations for Attorney General and Railroad Commissioner.
