A San Antonio firefighter is in serious but stable condition from injuries he sustained in an apartment fire Thursday.
The fire broke out Thursday afternoon at The Castlewood Condominiums on Medical Drive near Fredericksburg Road.
"We did have an active rescue on the third floor where we had a civilian that was trapped and could not get out, said Chief Charles Hood. "Our companies put a ladder up and rescued that person effectively, but during the rescue one of our firefighters fell."
Chief Hood told 550 KTSA News the firefighter either slipped or fell off the ladder during the rescue and is currently in serious, stable condition with back injuries at University Hospital.
The department was able to contain the fire to one building at the condominiums. A total of 27 units were damaged, with no indication at this time as to how many are completely destroyed.
The resident that was rescued from the fire was taken to Methodist Hospital, but the fire department said he is in stable condition and only suffered minor injuries from smoke inhalation.
