Safe Ride Home for Deputies

By Bill O'Neil

A free cab ride home--for those whose job it is to get you off the road--should you get behind the wheel after having too much to drink. That's just what Bexar County Sheriff's deputies can expect under a newly unveiled program.

"If a member feels they are impaired for any reason, they can call the number, and present the card with sheriff's office credentials to the cab driver--and receive a complimentary ride home" said Deputy Sheriff's Association of Bexar County President Joel Janssen. After seeing four officers arrested during her first week on the job--Sheriff Susan Pamerleau said she's behind the program--which is a partnership between the union and Yellow Cab.

"The Safe Ride Home program is for DSABC members--and I want to encourage all memebrs to use this program if they have been drinking--and are considering getting behind the wheel" the Sheriff said, insisting it does not lower the standard deputies are held to.

"There are requirments for deputies to demonstrate on and off duty their professionalism" Pamerleau said.

Officials said a similar program is already in existence for Bexar County employees--while another was recently unveiled for police in Houston.
