By Bill O'NeilFrom seventeen--to one? A bill filed by State Rep Roland Gutierrez asks for a study of a consolidation of school districts in Bexar County.
While the talk of consolidating the city with the county has been around for some time--Gutierrez said the discussion about school district consolidation is overdue.
"We've put off thios dialogue way way too long under the guise we're going to upset high school football or different district organizations" Gutierrez told 550 KTSA News. He said the money math is simple when you reduce redundancy.
"Seventeen procurement systems, seventeen bus systems, seventeen different policing units, seventeen cafeteria programs" Gutierrez said pointing to the possibility of saving a lot of cash--and increasing efficiency in local education.
At this point, the discussion is in the very preliminary stages, and Gutierrez is lookign for the study to answer a lot of questions.
"The request is to study the efficiencies of going down to one (school district) or five. Where did I come up with five? Basically, I took a number out of the air--and split the city up in quadrants" Gutierrez said.
