By Bill O'Neil and Johnny ShannonA shocking overnight accident in the Corpus Christi area--where at least six people are dead--and nine more are hurt--after officials said a vehicle that may have been loaded with illegal immigrants crashed after trying to get on to Naval Air Station Kingsville.
We're told it all began when the vehicle apparently was trying to out run authorities who were trying to make a traffic stop.
"The individual that wwas driving drove through the first guard gate, and attempted to continue driving east toward the base--that's when the second guard gate barriers were activated" said Corporal Charlie Ramirez with the Texas Department of Public Safety. He told 550 KTSA News the vehicle ran in to the barrier.
"They're cables--real big cables--that are anchored down to the roadway" Ramirez said in describing the barrier.
Ramirez said a number of those who were hurt suffered life-threatening injuries.
