AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The Defense Department says automatic government spending cuts could see military operations in Texas lose at least $1.7 billion before the end of the fiscal year.
In a Friday letter to Gov. Rick Perry, the department said the Army would lose $233 million in base operations funding across Texas. That includes cuts at Fort Bliss, Fort Hood and Fort Sam Houston.
Meanwhile, Army weapons depot operations in Red River and Corpus Christi may lose as much as $1.4 billion.
The Air Force could lose $92 million, with cuts hitting facilities at Lackland, Randolph and Sheppard Air Force Base.
That's an estimated $1.725 billion total by Sept. 30.
A Perry spokesman blamed the steep reductions on the White House's refusal to work with Congress to find responsible spending cuts.
