Trail Riders Head to S.A. Rodeo

by Elizabeth Ruiz
Eleven trail rides with more than 3,000 cowboys and cowgirls are heading to town from outlying areas for the  San Antonio Stock Show and  Rodeo.
Trail Ride chairman T.W. Wheat is riding with the Old Chisolm Trail Ride, which left Cuero Saturday and camped out Wednesday night on a ranch off of Highway 87 near China Grove.
Wheat told 550 KTSA News he's been on the Old Chisolm Trail Ride for 51 years through all kinds of weather.
"We've seen worse, but I'll tell you what -- it hasn't been real good this year.  It's cold," he said.
The cold weather won't stop them from riding into town after breakfast Thursday morning.
"The China Grove Lions Club puts on a breakfast for us every year," said Wheat.
Their destination is Splashtown on IH 35, where they'll camp out through Monday.
"We'll get into camp around 3 or 3:30 come rain, sunshine, sleet or snow," he said.
The San Antonio Stock show and rodeo opens Thursday and continues through February 23 at the AT&T Center and Freeman Coliseum.
Nine members of each trail ride will participate in the opening ceremony at the Rodeo Saturday night.
"We're just trying to keep Texas heritage alive."
