A Call for Volunteers

A call for volunteers to help county the city’s homeless population.

“Well we’ve already recruited quite a bit of volunteers,” Katie Vela said. “I think, last time I checked, we were around 300, but we want to get at least 100 more.”

She’s with the San Antonio Regional Alliance for the Homeless who is teaming with the City of San Antonio in the 2016 Point in Time Count of the area homeless.

“And we want to send out plenty of volunteers with a lot of experienced team leads to make sure we catch everyone because that’s how we justify funding for our programs is by showing the needs of the homeless population.”

The count is used to help ensure federal and local funding.

“And then we also use it for strategic planning and to learn more about our homeless population, so that we can target our services and make sure we’re meeting their needs,” Vela said.

The Point in Time Count is set for January 21st. You can register to help at www.sarahomeless.org/facts/volunteer-for-pit/
