Abortion opponents are calling out Republicans in the Texas House as the clock continues to tick down toward the end of the 2017 Legislative Session.
“With only 27 days remaining in the 85th Session, the Texas House has not passed any pro-life bills yet… and the Texas Senate has passed multiple pro-life bills” John Seago with Texas Right to Life said at the State Capitol in Austin Tuesday.
That ticking clock has a number of pro-life lawmakers very concerned.
“We only have nine days… the House does… to debate House bills” State Representative Matt Krause said.
Fellow State Representative Matt Schaeffer sounded a tone beyond frustration.
“If pro-life bills don’t hit the House Floor, we have no one to blame but Republicans in the Texas House” Schaeffer said, suggesting he might press Governor Greg Abbott to call a “Special Session” is that ends up being the case.
“Unfortunately… Session after Session… the Texas House has not prioritized pro-life bills” Schaeffer said.
Others voiced a similar frustration.
“To run out the clock and disingenuously blame Democrats for stalling legislation on the Texas House Floor at the end of the Legislative Session will simply not be tolerated” Texas Right to Life’s Emily Cook said, adding “If the last 140 days is a missed opportunity, and the Legislature does not act… more than another 100-thousand lives will be lost before the Members return to this building in 2019.”
