Auto Shop Burns Down

Fire damage at an auto repair shop in the city’s east side is estimated at $200,000 and cleaning up the aftermath was no easy task.

Christian Bove with the San Antonio Fire Department says the shop on Hackberry at Steves may have been burning for a while before it was reported Sunday night.

“I believe part of the reason is that the structure has large metal doors covering the bays and the fire may have been isolated in there,” said Bove.

Hazardous Material crews responded.

“There was quite a bit of runoff from that oil, so they were on the scene to try to mitigate that and keep it from going into the sewer system,” Bove said.

Hazmat crews worked through the night and early-morning hours to contain the oil runoff. Investigators are trying to determine what caused the fire.
