Was THIS exchange the most important moment of the first presidential debate?

In 90 minutes, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton were able to cover a lot of ground. From the economy to racism to Iraq to criminal justice, the candidates sparred on the stage for the first time.

But the lasting impact of the debate come from a few moments that persist in the public consciousness long after most of the debate is forgotten.

In Tuesday night’s debate, that moment came during a discussion of Trump’s tax returns. Trump is the first candidate in 40 years who refuses to release his returns.

Clinton suggested that Trump wasn’t releasing them because the returns would show he paid no taxes at all. Clinton noted a couple of older returns from the 1980s, that were disclosed through casino regulators, showed he paid no taxes.

“That makes me smart,” Trump replied.
