Execution Date for Convicted S.A. Killer

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) – A convicted hit man on Texas death row for carrying out a murder-for-hire plot that left a San Antonio woman dead more than 23 years ago has received an execution date.

Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesman Jason Clark said 43-year-old Rolando Ruiz is scheduled for lethal injection July 27. The U.S. Supreme Court last May refused to review his case.

Evidence showed Ruiz collected $2,000 to kill Theresa Rodriguez in 1992 at the request of her husband, Michael, and a brother-in-law in a life insurance scheme.

Ruiz got within an hour of execution in 2007 when a federal appeals court gave him a reprieve.

Michael Rodriguez also wound up on death row as one of the notorious Texas Seven gang of escaped inmates. He was executed in 2008.
