“I feel pretty good about where we’re headed right now,” says…RNC boss Reince Priebus.
He’s talking about—brace yourself—the Trump campaign.
Hearing that Priebus thinks that Trump’s firing on all cylinders is like when the editorial page of the Boston Globe told Republicans they finally did something right…by nominating John McCain.
So pleased is Ferris Priebueller with #NewTrump that he is making a bold prediction:
“It’s going to be important for us and for Donald Trump to continue down this measured path that he’s on, and if he does that, I think he’s going to be tied or ahead at or just after Labor Day,” Priebus predicted during a conference call with reporters.
“I think you see that on the national level, you see some of the national polls narrowing, some of the state polls are narrowing,” he said. “I think that what you’re seeing on the campaign is basically a continuation of a good couple of weeks that Donald Trump has had.”
Priebus added that the RNC has “been cooperating even more with the Trump campaign over the past couple weeks” and that both entities have been “getting along.”
Wait. “Cooperating”? “Getting along”? Has anyone told Trump this is going on?
Call me simplistic, but isn’t a bad sign if Reince likes where you’re going? This is the guy who thought he’d be going there with !Jeb!
“Measured path”? That’s my favorite part of Trump’s candidacy…said no one ever.
Look, I don’t know that the polls are right or wrong. Taking them at their face value, they show a race favoring Clinton, but still winnable for Trump. If there is some unmeasured, silent Trump vote, even more winnable. Not winning,I but winnable.
Every day, I encounter someone who I never would’ve dreamed was a Trump voter, either telling me he’s their choice, or they’re leaning. There are very few surprising Clinton voters.
My questions, if you will:
1.) Is Trump changing, or are we over-analyzing?
2.) If he is changing, are the changes meaningful to undecided or “#NeverTrump” voters? (One Ohio poll showed a significant plurality of voters just waiting for some remorseful walking-back, and they’ll go for him)
3.) Is he in danger of losing any of his year-long core supporters by appearing to care what people think or feel?
As for me, I’ll feel better when Reince Priebus doesn’t.
