Huffines Files Border Security Bill

Republican Senator Don Huffines has filed a bill that aims to grant Texas law enforcement officers more authority to help secure the border.

Huffines has made border security a priority issue. “We’ve got to secure our borders,” he told KTSA News.

The Dallas Senator plans to tackle the problem with Senate Bill 280.

“My bill is gonna give another tool in the toolbox, for state law enforcement to fight illegal immigration,” he said.

Under current law, he said, “state and local [agencies] cannot enforce immigration laws.”

And since he believes that the federal government is not taking a strong enough approach on the matter, he hopes to prevent any illegal immigrants from slipping through the cracks. The bill “empowers state agencies, law enforcement agencies to enforce criminal trespassing.”

The bill will go in front of lawmakers in March.
