Injured SAPD Officer Dies

A SAPD Officer, injured in a New Years Eve hit and run, died Sunday.

Ernesto Vasquez was crossing Blanco on the northside late New Years Eve when a car driven by his common law wife hit him.

“He’s been in a convalescent home for the last several months and never really came out of his coma,” SAPD Chief William McManus told reporters Sunday. “We had hoped for the best that he would come around, but it didn’t happen.”

Vasquez served eight years with SAPD. His wife had previously been charged with Failure to Stop and Render Aid.

“She’s the one who struck him,” McManus said. “We don’t know if she’s been out on bond or if she’s still in jail…we don’t know what will happen with the charges, if they are to be increased it’ll be up to the DA.”
