Landfill Concerns Growing

A proposed landfill near the Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer in Guadalupe County is raising concerns.

Reports this week that city leaders in Seguin and Schertz have expressed opposition. Wednesday, SAWS said it’s concerned about that landfill, and now, City Councilman Ron Nirenberg joins in.

“I think waste disposal anywhere over an aquifer outcrop causes serious concerns for the future safety of that water,” Nirenberg told KTSA News.

The landfill is proposed near the recharge zone of the aquifer, which supplies water to San Antonio. SAWS said it poses a risk to water supplies.

“We can’t afford to be too cavalier about how we treat our aquifers,” Nirenberg said.

And he thinks the San Antonio City Council should discuss this.

“I think the statement from SAWS is entirely appropriate and I would stand behind it.”
