San Antonio high school staff honored for reviving student in cardiac arrest

Two members of the Reagan High School coaching staff are being honored for saving a student athletes life.

Assistant Athletic Director Joseph Martinez tells us a member of the basketball team collapsed during practice.

The young man wasn’t breathing and his heart had stopped. Martinez and Coach John Hirst jumped into action.

Martinez says he started CPR on the young man while Coach Hirst retrieved a defibrillator.

The device was hooked up to the player and Martinez delivered a shock to his heart, then began another round of CPR. At some point, the players heart started beating again.

On Wednesday, Martinez and Hirst were honored by North Central Baptist Hospital for their life saving efforts.
