Harlandale Employee Arrested for Sexual Assault

The Head Custodian at a Harlandale Independent School District elementary school has been arrested on two counts of sexual assault of a child.

Moises Garcia (43), who works as Head Custodian for Flanders Elementary School, was taken into custody Thursday morning at the Harlandale School District Headquarters.

"HISD Police were notified this morning (Thursday) that a warrant had been issued for one of our employees, so our District Administration went and picked up the employee, took him over to our police department, and that's where he was arrested by Bexar County Sheriff's Office," said Leslie Garza, Public Information Officer with Harlandale ISD.

However, there is no proof as of now if the child in question is a Harlandale student or someone else.

"We have no evidence that any of the allegations stem from an incident on our campus or with our children. They were from 2006 and 2007," said Garza.

Harlandale ISD hired Garcia back in 2004, the same year he had charges dropped by completing his deferred adjudication for an attempted murder charge that was downgraded to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

"In 2004 when he was hired of course background checks were done and there was nothing on his record. We have done criminal background checks on him and all our employees on an annual basis, and never has anything come out on his criminal background checks," said Garza.

Garcia has been placed on administrative leave until further notice.
