San Antonio Recycling Pilot Plan

In an effort to increase the city's recycling rate to 60% by 2020, about 30,000 San Antonio residents are taking part in the pilot program to recycle organic material.
As part of the City's new Organic Material Recycling Pilot Program, the Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD) is introducing a new green cart for the collection of organic material such as grass, soiled pizza boxes, coffee grinds, fruits and vegetables. It's an effort to keep material out of the landfill and convert it to compost.
Through November, the carts will be delivered to homes in select neighborhoods which  are  part of the program's pilot phase.
As for if and when the program will go citywide, a decision will be made by City Council, upon reviewing the results of the pilot  program being tested.
Residents can obtain more information by calling 3-1-1, or visit the SWMD  website at
