Gallego Defeats Canseco

by Elizabeth Ruiz

State Representative Pete Gallego of Alpine ousted Republican incumbent Francisco "Quico" Canseco to win the 23rd congressional district .

Gallego has served in the state legislature for more than 20 years and Canseco was a Tea Party favorite when he was elected to the U.S. House 2 years ago.
"It's pretty surreal.  I'm pretty excited about it," said Gallego.

The sprawling district stretches from Bexar County to El Paso.

"I believe there were some Republicans who crossed over to vote for me in an area that I've represented for a long time," said Gallego.

It was one of the most expensive and closely wached congressional races and there were plenty of mud-slinging ads and mailers.

Democratic State Representative Joaquin Castro won the 20th congressional district office which is being vacated by U.S. Representative Charlie Gonzalez..

Republican Lamar Smith held on to the 21st congressional office and Democrat Henry Cuellar was re-elected in district 28.   Democrat Lloyd Doggett won the new 35th congressional district.
