A San Antonio Police Officer was recognized Monday for saving a possibly drunk young woman from burning alive.Officer German Huerta was on patrol near Loop 1604 and Judson Rd. Saturday morning, when a speeding car passed him, hit the barrier, and then flipped twice.
"I kind of stopped my car, put it out over the radio, and I was able to start walking to her car when the car was already on fire. I went over with my fire extinguisher and I started putting the fire out as best as I could. When the fire extinguisher didn't help, I just tried to take the female out of the car. She was unconscious at first, and I had to break the passenger window and try to take her out of the car," said Officer Huerta.
Officer Huerta was able to finally pull the woman out of the burning car when she regained consciousness, at which point he moved her to a safe location.
"It was more just kind of instinct when I came up to the car. I knew I didn't want her to burn alive, and she was still alive so I was going to do my best to get her out."
The San Antonio Fire Department made it to the scene, put out the fire, and treated the driver and the officer.
Officer Huerta suffered some minor burns to his hands and arms, cuts, and smoke inhalation, and the driver was transported to San Antonio Military Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries and burns.
The S.A.P.D believe the woman was driving drunk, and have said she may be facing charges of Driving While Intoxicated.
