SAPD Officer Arrested for DWI

by Elizabeth Ruiz and Johnny Shannon

A San Antonio Police officer arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated early Friday has been identified as 26-year-old Robert Romo, a 4 1/2-year veteran of the force.

Police Chief William McManus says Romo was pulled over after he tried to pass someone on the shoulder of  Loop 410 near San Pedro Avenue.

"He was in the car with one other individual.  He did give a breath sample and it turns out that he was indeed intoxicated," said McManus.

Reports indicate Romo climbed into the back seat of the vehicle after he pulled over and the arresting officer had a difficult time getting the occupants of the vehicle to roll down a window.

McManus says this type of behavior will not be tolerated.

"The whole DWI issue in itself is a serious one for us and the fact that one of our  police officers was arrested for it is always of concern," said McManus.

Romo was on  injured leave when he was arrested.  Now he's been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

"Certainly, if there's an officer who breaks the law, we will not cover for him or her.  We will not turn a blind eye.  We take this very, very seriously," said the chief.
