by Elizabeth RuizFor the first time in the history of Miss Fiesta San Antonio, there will be no evening gown competition, no skit or talent presentation, no pageant.
Miss Fiesta 2012 Katie Rivera told 550 KTSA News that her successor will be selected based on her creation of a service project.
"It can be under any of the pillars of Fiesta," she said.
That includes Arts and Culture, History and Heritage, Safety, Environment, Education and Health and Fitness.
"For example, I'm really into health and fitness, so if I were applying, I would plan zumbathons, go to schools and encourage children to exercise, and my whole theme would be about living healthy and eating well," said Rivera.
The deadline to apply for Miss Fiesta 2013 is January 31 and details are available at fiesta-sa.org.
"Ten girls will get a call back for an interview and five finalists will be selected. They'll present their projects to a panel and Miss Fiesta San Antonio will be selected in March," said Rivera.
The winner will work as an intern with the Fiesta San Antonio Commission during her reign and while there will be no pageant, there will be a coronation.
"There's still a crown involved and she'll get to go to all the Fiesta events. All the fun is still there," said Rivera.
Fiesta San Antonio is scheduled April 18-28 with more than 100 events.
