Hunt Independent School District is considering the possibility of concealed carry for their teachers.

The district is considering the proposed idea as part of their annual safety and security audit, which includes a number of other safety ideas.

"We've been reviewing several things since last fall as part of our safety and security measures, and we started talking about safety here. We're exploring several other things including perimeter fencing, surveillance cameras, scan cards, and different things like that as well," said Superintendent Doctor Crystal Dockery.

Doctor Dockery said they are merely in the investigative stage of their safety plan, and that the school board would be the one's to draft which of these safety measures is best for the district.

"Should a policy change or revision become what takes place the board would put together a draft, it would be sent to TASB (Texas Association of School Boards), their attorneys would review it; our attorney's would review it, and policy change typically takes a couple months," said Doctor Dockery.

That whole process could take months if not longer, and Doctor Dockery said it would most likely not be implemented this school year.

However, many in the community have expressed their support of the idea, because of how small the district is.

"We are a Pre-K through 8th district with only 197 students, but we're also in a remote location," said Doctor Dockery. "So, I think that is why a number of the community members have discussed this, just based on response time, etc. We're just wanting to make sure that the kids are safe."

The board is scheduled to meet Thursday to hear the first round of ideas surrounding the safety and security audit.
