More than a March

by Elizabeth Ruiz

"More than a March" is the theme of this year's San Antonio MLK March, which is expected to draw more than 100,000 participants, making it one of the largest in the country.

Bishop David Copeland with New Creation Christian Fellowship is chairman of the San Antonio MLK Commission. He says the march will include people from all walks of life.

"Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. did not just march with African Americans.  He also marched with Jewish people and Catholics, people of all races and ethnicities, because of the effort to uplift the civil rights of all people," said Copeland.

He says the theme is "More than a March" because they don't want the celebration to be a one-day event.

"Our efforts will be to promote the philosophy and theology of Dr. King year round and we're working on a summer program for young people," said Copeland.

The march will begin at 10 this morning at the Martin Luther King Academy on MLK Drive and will end at Pittman-Sullivan Park with a commemorative program from noon until 2 pm, which will include a screening of the Presidential Inauguration.

Via Park and Ride service will be available from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Alamodome, St. Philip's College and Crossroads. Passengers will be transported to Upland Drive at Martin Luther King Drive and the pickup location will be at Pittman-Sullivan Park.
