Boy Dies in Sand Pile

by Elizabeth Ruiz

Orange ribbons adorn the fence at Wilderness Oak Elementary in memory of a student who died in a sand pile.

Seven-year-old Wyatt McDaniel and his 5-year-old brother were playing at their father's North Bexar County horse-training facility Friday afternoon when Wyatt got buried in the mound of sand.

The boy was flown to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Investigators believe he suffocated in the sand pile at Wild Sunday Farm on Specht Road,  but the Bexar County Medical Examiner is expected to issue a ruling on the cause of death sometime this week.

Area residents gathered Sunday afternoon at Wilderness Oak Elementary to tie orange ribbons around the campus.
