San Antonio, like several other Texas cities, has an ordinance banning texting while driving, but State Representative Jose Menendez is trying once again, to get a statewide ban.
"I'm concerned that with 25 million Texans already living here and about half-a-million moving here every year, tour roads are getting more congested and we need to have every driver pay attention to what they're doing," said Menendez.
The democrat from San Antonio has filed one bill and authored another, both seeking a ban on texting behind the wheel. House bill 41 seeks to outlaw the use of cell phones and wireless communication devices behind the wheel, such as iPads.
"Wireless communication device is just a broad term for something that could be used to distract you from driving," said Menendez.
The use of cell phones with hands free devices would be exempt.
"I think the most important bill that I think makes the most sense is the one the governor vetoed, which is texting while driving," said Menendez.
He told 550 KTSA News that he's confident the measure will be approved again by the Texas legislature and Menendez believes this time, Governor Rick Perry will sign it into law.
