Gun Found on Madison HS Campus

A brief lockdown took place at Madison High School Friday morning, after a student came forward with claims that another student was hiding a gun in the trunk of their car.

"Lockdown was immediately put into place as a precaution while police investigated. Police searched the vehicle in the parking lot, and did in fact find an unloaded gun in the trunk of the car," said Aubrey Chancellor with North East Independent School District.

The lockdown lasted for approximately half an hour while NEISD Police completed the search.

"We applaud this student for coming forward; it was certainly the right thing to do. It takes everyone: staff, students, and the community to be on alert at all times, and in this case this student certainly did a good thing," said Chancellor.

Police also found an unidentified amount of marijuana in the students car, and have reported that the gun was in fact stolen.

"We don't believe that this 16-year-old had any intent of doing anything dangerous with the weapon. No on was in immediate danger; still though, we take this very seriously and charges will be filed," said Chancellor.

The student is charged with possession of a weapon in a gun free zone, possession of stolen property, and possession of marijuana.
