Bexar County Inmate Found Dead

by Elizabeth Ruiz

A preliminary report indicates a fall caused the death of a prisoner at the Bexar County Jail. Sheriff's spokesman Paul Berry says the inmate was found lying on the floor and bleeding Saturday night.

"There does not appear to have been an altercation.  Nobody appears to have witnessed an altercation and no contraband was found," said Berry.

Thirty-two-year-old Antonio Obregon had been arrested in October on a charge of aggravated robbery and was being held on the sixth floor of the Adult Detention Center.

"There were detention officers in the area who would have been able to hear and respond if an altercation did take place.  Preliminary reports suggest Mr. Obregon may have fallen," Berry said.
Obregon was rushed to San Antonio Military Medical Center where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The investigation continues and a final determination on the cause of death will be made by the Bexar County Medical Examiner.
