A 28-year-veteran of the Bexar County Sheriff's office is recovering at University Hospital after being shot by a fugitive hiding out at a Northwest Side home.
Sheriff's spokesman Paul Berry says deputies tracked down 35-year-old Juan Daniel Gonzales Tuesday evening at a home in the 11,000 block of Dublin Place.
"As they were trying to locate the suspect, he was hiding in the laundry room," said Berry.
When Deputy Jose Esquivel approached Gonzales, the suspect shot him twice.
"The other deputy moved him out of the way and returned fire and they ultimately took the suspect into custody," said Berry.
Berry says 49-year-old Esquivel was wearing a bullet-proof vest and he was talking as he was placed into an ambulance and transported to University Hospital.
Gonzales also was put into an ambulance.
He's a registered sex offender who had seven outstanding warrants, including five for felony theft, one for retaliation and one for violation of the sex offender registration statute.
